Peeks at the Mill City Museum

I recently visited the Mill City Museum in downtown Minneapolis, and it was such a surprisingly lovely experience that I thought I'd share a few peeks with you.  The museum is located in the space once occupied by one of the world's largest flour mills, and it nicely depicts the mill industry and general Minneapolis history.

A really cool element was this giant elevator ride which illustrated the rise and fall of the milling industry in a really engaging and fascinating way.  The literal movement of it really made me feel immersed in the lesson.

Also quite cool was the depiction of the evolution of Betty Crocker.  I kind of like that her image really seems to track the hair, makeup, and fashion trends of a given time period.

And how cute is this Pillsbury Doughboy cookie jar?  I could practically hear his silly giggle (and sort of love how this photo has two random Pillsbury Doughboys creeping in the background).  All in all, it was a delightful Sunday afternoon activity.  If you're ever in Minneapolis, stopping by the Mill City Museum is totally worth it!

Crazy Daisies!

Recently, I've come to terms with the fact that I have whatever the opposite of a green thumb is.  Although they make me so very happy, it's nearly impossible for me to sustain even the heartiest of plants.  So, I have taken to bringing home a little bouquet now and again, when I feel like my home needs some extra bits of happiness infused into it.  In hopes of springtime's arrival, I recently got a lovely (and cheap!) little bouquet called "Crazy Daisies" at the grocery market.  Does anyone else remember doing science-class projects with food coloring and carnations?  I'm still a bit excited about how vividly blue flowers can get with a little help!  Here's to crazy daisies, and the many other signs of springtime!

Teenaged Dreams

This weekend, a girlfriend came to town for a visit and we explored a few of Minnesota's touristy treats.  Of course, this meant that we made a big ol' stop at the Mall of America, where we happened upon a DEB Shop (side note: I completely thought this shop closed down in the late 90s, when the one in my hometown mall disappeared and was replaced by an Old Navy).  Back when I was 12 years old, I used to wistfully look at the prom gowns in DEB shop and daydream about going to prom as a high schooler.  By the time I was actually prom-going age, I was more interested in the "classier" prom offerings of department stores.

So, it made complete sense for two 27-year-old women to nostalgically try on prom gowns in good ol' DEB shop. I was particularly fond of the bejeweled numbers, while she went for a few dresses in a solid mermaid cut.  It was such a silly delight!  How do you like to re-live your younger years?

On Picture-Taking

Please, digitally raise your hand if you are an avid picture-taker (yes, I realize that photographer is the proper term, but I sorta think there's a difference between the art of photography and the pleasure of frequent picture-taking).  I am, and have been since my youthful days of disposable Kodak cameras.  I just love capturing images of friends, places, random interesting/weird things, to keep in my archives indefinitely.  At times, though, I feel concerned that my frequent picture-taking either gets annoying to my companions, or that it keeps me from being in the moment (especially thanks to iPhones -- the camera's always in your pocket, just asking to take a picture).  How do my fellow picture-taking friends find balance in this?  I'd love your input!

Saturday is... So Bright!

Who else has been browsing the heck out of the Kate Spade Saturday website?  I have a notorious weakness for all things bright and colorful -- the other day, I left something behind at work, and my coworker told me that she knew it was mine because all my stuff is so bright and sunny.  Of course, this means that I am especially obsessed with the Kate Spade Saturday "abstract" pattern -- it pops up in the clothing, jewelry, and bags, which (of course) is such a delight to me!

Recipe to Try: Irish Soda Bread

Despite the fact that I love it so, I have never tried making my own Irish Soda Bread.  This just might be the time to do it!  I'm throwing a St. Patrick's Day brunch today at my boyfriend's place -- unfortunately because of the long-distance thing and his lack of useful kitchen gadgets (sigh!), I'll be picking up a loaf from a local bakery or grocer.  But, upon returning to Minneapolis, you bet your boots that I will be giving this tasty-looking recipe a whirl!

Happy St. Patrick's Day Weekend!

Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend, you guys!  I've got all the essentials packed for a weekend of celebrations in Pittsburgh.  My boyfriend and I are hosting a green-themed brunch (helllooo, food coloring!) and then celebrating at the Pittsburgh Parade and various other local festivities. I haven't been back to Pittsburgh since January, so I'm so very excited to see friends and go to my favorite Steel City haunts!
